New Year, New Me! Or Maybe Not...

New Year, New Me! Or Maybe Not...

At the dawn of a new year, we come across the expectation of creation another “New Year’s Resolution” with achievements you want to accomplish throughout the year.

But as we know all too well, we are met with disappointment as we yet again fail to keep them going.

BUT, a new trend is going around for goals for the new year. Let us address the following points to help you with goal planning:

🪴 What is the difference between a goal and a resolution?

🪴 Would goals be more effective than resolutions or would we fail at goals as well?

🪴 Is this another trend that wouldn’t last long?

First: What are goals?

Goals have a desired endpoint that is finite.

That means that there is no questioning what the desired outcome of a goal is. People create short- and long-term goals for all types of ‘life categories’ such as personal, career, health, etc.

So, what are resolutions?

Resolutions are more open-ended, generally described as a “promise to yourself”.

They are a general idea of what you wish your life to be like and how you see yourself in a year.

And the difference is…?

A literal action plan that takes you from point A to point B.

However, a resolution is the general idea of wanting to get to point B with no real steps to get there.

For instance, if you create a new year’s resolution for being healthier, your goals would instead of being general, they are something along the lines of “Start the first month with one meal per day as a healthy meal.”

Are goals less effective or more effective than resolutions?

Businesses run off goals. Short term and long-term goals are the center of success in businesses and what sometimes differentiates the successful ones from the unsuccessful ones.

Why? Well, the reason is the goals are very specific.

But the goal doesn’t work alone. The resolution is an aid to creating the goal in the first place.

An example of a resolution could be learning and growing. While that is a very general resolution, the goals are what make this goal a reality.

Once you know the desire to learn, you can think of specific goals that are achievable, like read a book in a month, listen to a podcast once a week, go to a class to learn something you’ve always wanted to learn, read blog articles on a specific topic you are interested in every week, and so on.

The more options the better, especially if you are someone who gets bored easily (guilty is charged!)

Is this just another trend?

Our thoughts are that it isn’t just a trend, it's here to stay! Why? Because there’s proof that goals have helped major successful people achieve their goals and create something great!

And now that we know that while resolutions are just the beginning to an amazing year, goals are what make the resolutions possible and a reality.
